Cynophobia: What Is It?

By Robin Setser

If you're a pet owner, it would be far-fetched to think about being afraid of dogs. Believe it or not, though, there are many people that fear even the friendliest of canines. This particular fear is known as cynophobia, which is actually more common than you may think. If you'd like to know more about the phobia in question, from how it develops to the ways that it can be cured, please read on.

If you believe that you are cynophobic, you will realize it before anyone else. According to companies such as Assisi Animal Health, this particular phobia is highlighted by an unreasonable fear of canines, regardless of their sizes or demeanors. If you're at a party, for example, and the homeowner has a dog, you will do whatever you can to stay away from the animal's general vicinity. This is the most common sign to be aware of.

What causes cynophobia in the first place, though? It's difficult to say, mainly because every case is different. Someone might have had a bad experience with a pet as a child if they were at their friend's house. Another person may simply be fearful of being close to an animal, no matter how calm or friendly it appears. When it comes to cynophobia, there's no single cause that can be attributed to every situation.

Cynophobia is troublesome, to say the least, but it's not like it can't be cured. As a matter of fact, it's been proven that it can be remedied with therapy, which focuses on the negativity that some people associate with dogs. By doing so, they will be able to take said negativity and rework it, in a sense, so that it becomes more positive. In simplest terms, this will help people become less tense when they're around dogs.

While not everyone will be a dog person, this doesn't mean that they should freeze or become fearful at the sight of one of these animals. Unfortunately, this is what cynophobia creates. Dogs are known for being loyal, loving pets, so why should one suffer from this condition? It's clear that there are ways to cure it. At the very least, you will be able to render said condition more manageable so that it's not nearly as influential.
